“With the first month of 2008 almost behind me, I find myself eagerly looking forward to the rest of the year ahead and the wonderful things that the world of online marketing will bring!

2007 was a tumultuous year for me: after leaving the role of Affiliate Manager at Littlewoods Shop Direct Group, where I had spent three busy years managing and setting up affiliate and shopping comparison programs for brands such as Additions Direct, Kays, Great Universal and Littlewoods, I took some time out to have my first baby, a girl named Robyn, and enter the world of sleepless nights, constant feeding schedules and nappy changing.

I think to all the dedicated affiliates, big or small, out there, affiliate marketing can be very much likened to the world of parenthood. Parents and affiliates forgo all aspects of ‘normal’ existence for a life of dedicated perseverance aiming to ensure that their child (whether it be a human being or much loved website/business) is cared for and given all the means possible to grow and thrive.

My daughter’s first birthday was the proudest day of my life. Not only for the reasons that she was one and that she had overcome several milestones such as crawling, walking and talking but also because I had achieved things and overcome milestones myself. The first few weeks of sleepless nights and learning to look after something so small and helpless was hard work, but once I got used to the new scheme of things and saw that, with every new morning, there was a new reward such as a first smile or a first handclap I knew that the effort was worth it.

Any affiliate worth their salt will know this feeling – it takes hard work and dedication to keep working through the night when you may already have put equal numbers of hours in through the day. But, as your website and business starts to develop and you see your first visitor, followed by your first click to merchant site and finally your first sale, you know that you are on the path to success. Even if things take time to meet your expectations, the experience and knowledge you gain is an achievement in itself!

Nadeem set the tone for affiliate marketing for this year: “Let 2008 be the year you can!” Don’t be afraid to try new ideas… those who don’t succeed on their first attempt generally enjoy more long term success and acquire greater knowledge than those who do.

As newly appointed Senior Affiliate Manager at Azam Marketing, I am excited about the opportunities the Azam Marketing team can bring to affiliates.
