At the glitzy red carpet event held in central London on 2nd June, V A C Media and Trinity Mirror Group overcame stiff competition in their category from the likes of the Guardian, Channel 4, Renault and Jack Daniels to win the Commercial Partnership award for <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/MirrorCashback_com/1880/2" target="_blank">MirrorCashback.com</a>, the highly successful cashback site launched in November 2008 which Azam Marketing has been heavily involved with.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The Azam Marketing and V A C Media teams were attending the A4U Awards for the affiliate marketing industry on the same night, for which they were also shortlisted, and the AOP Prize was collected by Paul Hood, Head of Digital at Mirror Group Newspapers (pictured above).</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">&#8220;By partnering with V A C Media, Trinity Mirror was able to move quickly and launch a differentiated, stand-out product, owning the cashback concept in the eyes of its readers and users,&#8221; the AOP stated. &#8220;Through strong editorial support and sustained in-paper and online promotion, the partnership has brought cashback to the mainstream, a valuable, timely service which in turn strengthens the Mirror’s ‘Peoples’ Champion’ credentials.&#8221;</p>
<p>The judges’ commented: “In exploring new commercial activities, this partnership provided a fundamental understanding of the consumer and the potential for longevity.”</p>

<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">There have been a spate of articles in the digital media press in the last two weeks exploring the declining revenues for online publishers, particularly those relying upon CPM advertising. Even News Corporation chief executive Rupert Murdoch chipped into the debate on 2 April by <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/urging_newspapers_to_charge_for_online_content/1342/2" target="_BLANK">urging newspapers to charge for online content</a> (Murdoch&#8217;s <em>Wall Street Journal</em> is one of the few publications to charge readers to access its articles online).<br />

<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Having worked in digital through the <a title="Internet bubbles - when will we ever learn?" href="http://www.azam.info/dotcom-internet-boom-returns/">dot.com crash</a>, when many publishers who depended on display advertising went to the wall, I was always perplexed by the desire by so many to jump at the chance to give away their content for free in exchange for income from CPM ads. Now that rates are falling through the floor, it is inevitable that publishers will look to subscription models.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">However, as we all know, internet users have become addicted to getting content for free and if most sites start to charge they will invariably lose almost all their visitors. For that reason alternative revenue streams need to be considered.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">The websites of many media groups already promote bingo and dating. These can provide additional income, but the fact is these services take money out of readers&#8217; pockets. <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">In these nightmarish economic times, services that not only generate revenue but benefit site visitors by saving them money are surely the holy grail and it is no surprise we have recently launched reward portals for the likes of Trinity Mirror, Newsquest, Northern and Shell, Daily Mail and General Trust, and other such media groups. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">Just yesterday V A C Media launched <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/DailyStarCashback_com/172/11">DailyStarCashback.com</a>, and in the last few months have released cashback websites for several companies including <a rel="nofollow" title="Visit Diamond Cashback" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Diamond_car_insurance/172/12" target="_blank">Diamond car insurance</a>, the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/IDT_Prime_Card/172/13">IDT Prime Card</a> and <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Payzone/172/14">Payzone</a>. V A C Media have now launched nearly 70 incentive sites in the UK.<br />

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;">MirrorCashback.com is a collaborative effort with has involved dozens of people over many weeks. With some previous clients, I have done my bit, but the other parties involved may have been lacking in terms of the enthusiasm, efficiency, and attention to detail successful projects require&#8230; but this has been completely different. This initiative has been the most tiring thing I have ever done in my life, and I have been fortunate if I&#8217;ve had a chance to sleep more than four hours on many nights, but it has also been the most enjoyable venture I have ever worked on. And that is because it has been such a delight to work so many terrific people at <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/V_A_C_Media/172/15">V A C Media</a>, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Trinity_Mirror/172/16">Trinity Mirror</a> and <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Azam_Marketing/172/17">Azam Marketing</a>. I have never come across such dedicated folk in my life: for example, one of the V A C Media team members must have worked something like 40 hours straight over the last few days and had to be torn away from his computer!<br />

<p><span style="font-size: larger"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><strong>Ready<em>, </em>Steady<em>, </em>Go!<em> </em></strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">With all the background research having been done (<a title="Read the first article in this trilogy" href="http://www.azam.info/cashback-website-design/">Part I</a>, <a title="Read second article about design conceptualisation of Froggybank.co.uk" href="http://www.azam.info/website-design-branding-advice/">Part II</a>), it was time we started sketching and refining the designs for FroggyBank. </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">I hesitate to admit the whole design process took us good two months of fierce brainstorming and prototyping. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: larger"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><strong>The Initial Steps </strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong><em>Site structure:</em></strong> We began by listing the details of the elements that would go on different sections of the website. We shuffled around the layout of the features endlessly. We highlighted what was most important for users and made these and related sections easily accessible for users. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong><em>Mockup designs:</em></strong> After the initial site structure was decided, the design team started playing around with the page elements and produced a number of design variations which were unique, usable and visually appealing. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong><em>Editing rounds:</em></strong> Just about when we thought the design elements were complete and the job was nearly finished, we were confronted with new feedback, arguments and counter-arguments to revise elements. The client, eDealsUK, was a delight to work with because, despite their need to launch a 100% cashback website as soon as possible, they were there with us every step of the way and supported us through dozens of revisions. We restructed and refined the site at least forty times. </span></p>

<p>&nbsp;<span style="font-size: larger"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><strong>Proofing&nbsp;and Beta Testing </strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">After countless rounds of redesign, we were confident we had something which truly answered all&nbsp;the client&#8217;s needs. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The final prototypes were approved, followed by an interval to convert and implement the new designs on the actual site code. The project was completed with a final round of testing and design purification. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">After a year of work, FroggyBank was <a title="Read an interview we published with one of the Froggybank staff on the day the portal was launched" href="froggybank-cashback-interview-janine-sinclair/">finally launched on 16 April, 2008</a>. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: larger"><span><strong>Final Words </strong></span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">As for the final design as it stands today, we are pleased of its simplicity which explains the purpose of FroggyBank from the first glance. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Every design job has its tedious bits, but&nbsp;we absolutely loved designing Froggybank and giving it a look which is both functional and easy to get to grips with. We congratulate the programmers at eDealsUK who worked very hard to implement the prototypes so wonderfully. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Since the website&#8217;s launch, we have received tons of comments in appreciation of the design and usability of Froggybank.co.uk. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The design work was completed at this stage, but then the project was handed over to other divisions within Azam Marketing, specifically the Affiliate Management, Public Relations and Paid Search ones to attract members to the service. The site has been a runaway success, mentioned in hundreds of newspapers and websites, and we are delighted to have helped <a rel="nofollow" title="Visit the cashback site they are all talking about..." target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Froggybank/91/5">Froggybank</a> leapfrog 105 cashback sites to become the 8<sup>th</sup> most popular in the UK in just a space of three months (popularity based on Alexa rankings, as published on <a rel="nofollow" title="CashbackNews,co.uk, an independent site about the cashback industry, lists Froggybank.co.uk in 8th place on their charts, just after Azam Marketing's other client eDealsUK.com" target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Cashbacknews/91/6">Cashbacknews</a>). </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Our Evaluation of the First Design </strong></span></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" title="The old (pictured) and the new (click here to visit Froggybank.co.uk as it stands now)" target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/link/73/3"><img border="0" alt="" src="http://www.azam.info/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/072108-0058-insightinto11.png" /></a><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>&nbsp;</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Here is a quick list of the basic flaws we found in our first design:</span>&nbsp;</p>
<ol>
<li><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">It was too empty at the top and too cluttered and text heavy at the bottom. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The colours were very common and did not establish any distinctive feel. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The logo appeared weak and&nbsp;did not possess&nbsp;symmetry. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The entire design lacked a brand theme or cues, hints or colours whose usage could be extended and developed.</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">It was time we undertook thorough research to educate ourselves to deliver something more meaningful. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>The Essence of Froggybank </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">We asked what Froggybank was. What&nbsp;were we selling? What do the customers want?&nbsp;Would Froggybank deliver all of that? Had we understood what Froggybank&nbsp;was all about? And a hundred&nbsp;other questions like that. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Those are the sort of questions you will find on every good designers checklist, be it for a simple logo design or an entire&nbsp;company branding strategization. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Not only did the owners of Froggybank plan to engineer something which could outperform competitors technically at all levels, but also something much more sophisticated from a design perspective. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>The USP (Unique Selling Proposition) of Froggybank </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">For eDealsUK Limited,&nbsp;the company behind Froggybank, the project was to be much more than a commercial quest. Over the months I witnessed them&nbsp;contacting numerous charities and welfare organizations: plans were underway to use the website to buy carbon offset to the tune of hundreds of thousands of pounds, raise money for charities&nbsp;and do things for the world that far exceed the desires of most entrepreneurs. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">If you&#8217;d like&nbsp;to read more about how Froggybank aims to help the environment, <a rel="nofollow" title="Read about plans to offset millions of tons of carbon" target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/go_here/73/4">go here</a>, and you can see how the&nbsp;website supports&nbsp;charity fundraising activities&nbsp;<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/here/73/5">here</a>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Having studied dozens of cashback websites and&nbsp;collated information from several experts in the sector, it was very clear that we stood in an open field with no established design trends or rules to play by.&nbsp;We had absolute freedom to go in any direction that we wanted and were given a blank canvas to work with by&nbsp;the Directors of eDealsUK. They chose to liberate the designers and, rather than forcing us to stick rigidly to what had worked for them with previous cashback sites, challenged us to come up with something fresh. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">They were determined to differentiate Froggybank from conventional cashback websites, and wanted Froggybank to be more than them not only in terms of what it offered but in the aesthetics. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The reason for undertaking the above research was to better connect ourselves and our team with the product and create something which could reflect the true essence of the brand to be. At this stage we had enough bricks and mortar to start creating something meaningful for Froggybank. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Branding Guidelines </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">After painstaking brainstorming sessions we decided the following branding parameters for our design team to adhere to. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Logo/Brand Identity </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Both Azam Marketing and eDealsUK&#8217;s teams agreed that the chosen name Froggybank would only distinguish itself if we built a brand character around it. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The logo design creation task was commissioned to a logo specialist and after a few dozen revisions we had something which gave us a sense of direction to start building a theme. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">This was the first version of the logo:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Creative <a rel="nofollow" title="Freehand circle drawing in about 2 seconds!" target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/can_be_nbsp_made_quickly/73/6">can be&nbsp;made quickly</a>,&nbsp;but the fact is most of the brands we have grown to love and adore have gone through the same&nbsp;process of design, redesign, redesign as Froggybank did. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Layout Plans </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">The layout design had to look clean, fresh and use minimal graphical elements. It needed&nbsp;white space and breathing room. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">It had to provide users with all the essential options for maximum usability and help them reach every part of the site with the minimum number of clicks. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">It had to use common layout features which users might expect from a shopping website. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Having to adhere to such rules is quite a challenge while still being required to come up with a unique flavour!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Colours </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">A bright monotone colour combination to be used throughout, across all mediums. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Fonts </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">To allow maximum flexibility and faster browsing, only ordinary fonts had to be used wherever possible. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Images </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">In recent years the overuse of stock photography &#8211; or even professional photography &#8211; on most types of websites has developed a negative reputation, so Froggybank must try to limit use of photography. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana">Use of illustrations could be permitted as long as they did not clash with the Froggybank logo.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana"><strong>Branding Cues </strong></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Verdana">The three radio interviews with different BBC local stations were to </span><a title="Listen to interview with Nadeem on BBC Radio in June" href="http://www.azam.info/shopping-online-money-saving-expert/"><span style="font-family: Verdana">advise people on how to save money online</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana">, comment on Sainsbury&#8217;s shopping website going down for a few days, and&nbsp;to talk about ASOS.com&#8217;s phenomenal rate of growth. Each appearance gets two or three mentions of Froggybank and other eDealsUK websites, so it&#8217;s worth the effort. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana">The media don&#8217;t give much notice when they want you to&nbsp;appear&nbsp;- sometimes they just let you know a couple of&nbsp;hours beforehand &#8211; and fitting the interviews in between my&nbsp;many meetings does lead to scenarios that I would find amusing were they not to involve me. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana">For instance, yesterday&#8217;s interview on BBC Three Counties Radio was carried out on my mobile phone as I was sitting in the basement of McDonalds in Camden Town.&nbsp;Just five minutes before I had to go on air,&nbsp;I had managed to beg them to open it up as I couldn&#8217;t find anywhere quiet in the area. I may have reeled off the growth figures about ASOS.com on the station, but the interviewer had no idea I&nbsp;had&nbsp;written them down on a McDonalds napkin&nbsp;a few seconds before the interview by reading a Press Release on a Thai gentleman&#8217;s laptop.&nbsp;The bloke&nbsp;didn&#8217;t speak a word of English and must have thought I was trying to nick his iMac.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana">The next&nbsp;undertaking is to do a video interview with Affiliate Future on Friday to&nbsp;provide affiliates with information about </span><a rel="nofollow" title="Found out about InkFactory's affiliate program - the highest paying inkjet affiliate program in the UK" target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/InkFactory_com/63/10"><span style="font-family: Verdana">InkFactory.com</span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana">. With the credit crunch biting, the Beeb wanted me to offer listeners advice on how to save money by shopping online.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">Initially I was not interested because appearing on radio shows and the like is</span><span style="font-family: Verdana;"><a href="http://www.azam.info/audio/bbc-radio-nadeem-azam.mp3" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.azam.info/wp-content/uploads/image/radio-show-southern-counties.JPG" border="0" alt="Jon Cuthill is a popular morning presenter on BBC Radio Solent. Nadeem appeared on end of previous broadcaster's show until 9am and then Jon Cuthill's from 9am onwards (click to listen)" hspace="11" vspace="11" width="260" height="331" align="right" /></a></span><span style="font-family: Verdana;"> not my cup of tea and the BBC was not going to be paying for it (Auntie does not pay experts for their time?). A few years back after I was regularly called by affiliate network after affiliate network </span><span style="font-family: Verdana;">to restaurants near their offices to “pick my brain” and, in exchange for</span><span style="font-family: Verdana;"> a pizza and a cranberry juice, give them what they themselves referred to as invaluable advice, I vowed never to do freebie work again, unless it was for a good cause or somebody worthwhile who couldn’t afford it. Hence I’ll always be there to assist new affiliates on Instant Messenger, but not give unpaid presentations at conferences where the organisers may make tens if not hundreds of thousands of pounds in profit. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Verdana;">However, </span><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/link/58/4"><span style="font-family: Verdana;"></span></a><span style="font-family: Verdana;">I eventually relented!<br />

<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; line-height: 115%">It did not surprise the Azam Marketing bods that I won a prize at the Buy.at Speakeasy event for being the first one to identify what the term 5 / 5 referred to in the field of search, as the <a title="Read write-up of CJ roundtable discussion on Adwords brand name bidding rule changes" href="http://www.azam.info/commission-junction-roundtable-google-adwords-changes/">Google Adwords changes</a> coming into force that day had consumed quite a bit of my time. </span></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; line-height: 115%">What has the outcome of the developments&nbsp;been? Not as drastic as some had feared, but in many cases our PPC team has had to increase bids on clients&#8217; brand name terms. This has particularly been the case with, for instance,&nbsp;airlines we are contracted to do paid search for, whose&nbsp;trademarked terms&nbsp;have been attacked by consolidators and comparison sites. Hey ho, it&rsquo;s precisely the reason why Google brought in the changes, to force marketers to increase bids, so not a suprise.</span></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; line-height: 115%">The changes have also added considerably to our Affiliate Management workload as clients&rsquo; trademarked terms that were previously protected are now open for anybody to bid on. It means both rivals and affiliates are able to advertise on the terms. </span></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; line-height: 115%">Even though brand name bidding is prohibited on most affiliate programs we manage, some affiliates have been &lsquo;trying it on&rsquo; and our Senior Affiliate Manager Sinead has been struggling on a daily basis to keep tabs on the situation and kick off cheating affiliates from&nbsp;programs. The&nbsp;<a rel="nofollow" title="Fantastic tool to keep an eye on people bidding on Google Adwords" target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Brandwatcher/56/10">Brandwatcher</a> tool has been a Godsend. When caught, one affiliate responded remarkably frankly: &ldquo;to be honest, I was expecting to get found out. I wanted to see how long I could get away with it for.&rdquo; </span></span></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><span style="font-family: Verdana"><span style="font-size: 10pt; color: black; line-height: 115%">Unlike most networks and agencies who just give violating affiliates a warning the first couple of times, we instantly revoke all commissions and terminate affiliates from programs, so it&rsquo;s not a good idea to mess with our clients!</span></span></div>

" href="http://www.azam.info/affiliate-digital-marketing-development/">Maz (Affiliate Future)&rsquo;s leaving do</a>, Travel Distribution Summit 2008, a Zanox networking evening, a Manchester affiliate marketing meet-up, Affiliate Dinner London,&nbsp;and a couple of informal affiliate gatherings. It can be tiring, but I put a big emphasis on attending events because it allows us to keep a pulse on developments in our industry, forge relationships with people in the sector, and spread the word about our clients. &nbsp;&nbsp;</span></span></div>

<p>I am excited the time has finally arrived for me to write my first article discussing web design. We have worked on over 200 websites at Azam Marketing and Froggybank.co.uk was one of our most challenging, but also most rewarding.</p>
<p><b>Froggybank.co.uk</b></p>
<p>Our first design case study is <a rel="nofollow" title="Click here to visit this 100% cashback website" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Froggybank_co_uk/53/2" target="_blank">Froggybank.co.uk</a>. I have tried to summarize the entire design process including first thoughts, evaluation and final approval to allow our readers a comprehensive insight into the evolution of Froggybank.co.uk&#8217;s design over a period of several months.</p>
<p><b>Foggybank.co.uk – The Brief</b></p>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">Our client <a rel="nofollow" title="Fact file about eDealsUK Limited" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/eDealsUK/53/3" target="_blank">eDealsUK</a>, an established online cashback operator, asked us to work with their hugely-talented internal team to design a website for their 100% cashback project, froggybank.co.uk. The brief was a site that would positively engage users, clearly explain what the concept of cashback, and be perceived as a pleasant brand to visitors. It was a challenge we relished.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><b>Step 1 – Identify Competitors</b></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">Whereas carefully analysing competitors can often be a valuable use of time, it proved to be somewhat of a fruitless experience in this case.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">Some of the sites I came across lacked visual flair. They could have been strengthened from a design and brand development perspective.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><b>Step 2 – Review  Market Position</b></div>

<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">I conducted a detailed market review with the eDealsUK team and my Manager Nadeem. Cashback sites appeared to be succeeding because they are a new concept and people love the idea of earning cashback on their purchases. However, the focus on product offering seemed to be to the exclusion of aesthetics.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">As a designer, my interest is in understanding the relationship between the colour, style, layout and pattern of a website and how this affects customer’s conscious and subliminal view of it. This helps to identify what to do and what not to do when taking the initial steps in a design project.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><b>Step 3 – Utilise Client Experience and Knowledge.</b></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">I had a series of conference calls with the CEO of eDealsUK and the company&#8217;s staff to gain a deeper understanding of where the cashback business was heading. After running eDealsUK for four years and having more cashback websites than any other business in the UK, they had considerable knowledge to share.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">I spent time trying to see how the wealth of information provided could be utilised to provide the best possible user experience. The important notes and design parameters are summarized below:</div>
<ol>
<li>Education &#8211; Cashback is still a relatively new term for many, and a large number of visitors do not understand the concept. Therefore, the website must educate visitors and address all concerns about cashback shopping. eDealsUK&#8217;s staff highlighted the fact that web visitors don’t read everything. Hence, the design should emphasize what’s essential and what’s not.</li>
<li>Branding &#8211; A lively and fresh brand is essential. It should be easily recognizable, appealing, consistent and flexible through various mediums besides internet.</li>
<li>Simplicity &#8211; Simple designs yield better returns. Keeping the contents and design focused on delivering what the user wants ends up leading to better conversions.</li>
<li>Style &#8211; A dash of 2.0 will not harm the branding but it must remain simple and interesting for longevity.</li>
<li>Incentivisation &#8211; Design for a Cause &#8211; eDealsUK wanted to include some noble features into the project, including buying carbon offsetting for each new member and giving users an option of keeping their cashback or donating to a good cause. This proved another challenge for us: to incorporate a feel of environmental-friendliness, professionalism and seriousness through design, so that people both see the site’s green credentials and donate their money with trust.</li>
</ol>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt"><b>Finally &#8211; The Challenge Emerges</b></div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">Based on my primary research and feedback from several specialists in different areas of the eDealsUK set-up, I started to envisage a design for the new 100% cashback website and how to address the needs of internet shoppers who may be unaware they can earn cashback while shopping online.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">With not much precedence in terms of strong design in the sector to refer to, it was time for me and eDealsUK&#8217;s internal designers to roll our sleeves up and set the standards ourselves.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">Situations like these can be tricky. For some it can become a nightmare and for others an opportunity to let loose. For us it was a challenge we were prepared to accept.</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">Our first goal: &#8216;To sketch the brand character and define various factors which customers can relate to the brand.&#8217;</div>
<div style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt">eDealsUK had come up with the name UKShoppersClub for the cashback site. It was a catchy name which clearly defined the business, was easy to remember and was search-engine friendly. eDealsUK’s programmers and designers spent the last half of 2007 coding and designing the website. I thought it was mighty impressive.</div>

Even though Purple Parking&#8217;s commissions have been reduced by more than 25%, they are only&nbsp;decreasing&nbsp;commission to affiliates&nbsp;by 25% for its affiliates, which means it is still presents a highly rewarding opportunity.&nbsp;There are&nbsp;many exciting plans in store this summer, including the launch of&nbsp;a new website.&nbsp;The extra long cookie period of 60 days remains.</p>
<p>Please also be aware that Purple Parking does not permit publishers to link to their website via an affiliate link if there is any voucher or coupon code for Purple Parking on their website or in an email they send out.</p>
<p>This&nbsp;is because when customers use a voucher code and make their booking through an affiliate link, Purple Parking&nbsp;often ends up losing money on the transaction. Discount Codes were only ever intended for the exclusive use of selected people such as Purple Parking Club members and not for the use of affiliate partners. </span></span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">I wanted to add charities to froggybank but was concerned about people signing up, making a&nbsp;small donation, and then pulling out just to get a generous cashback based on the CPA. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana">I didn&#8217;t want such misuse to happen to charities and that is why I thought of the referral commission earned from these charity sites going into the &#8216;froggy pond&#8217; and off-setting carbon with that money. People willing to donate to a charity will surely like the idea of off-setting carbon at the same time. Killing two birds with the one stone as the saying goes&#8230; they&nbsp;will be&nbsp;supporting two causes at the same time this way. </span></div>

I have always been involved with this charity since I first started working myself. It&nbsp;is rewarding to help a child in an undeveloped country. It&#8217;s&nbsp;a truly beautiful thing to receive&nbsp;letters, pictues&nbsp;and photos from the child you sponsor as well, and to be able to write to them. They absolutely love it and they love you as well.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">My estimate is there are not more than two million people in the UK who are actively shopping via cashback sites. As Keith Budden said a while back, there is a potential for another 20 million people in the country to be buying via cashback websites.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">Providing you are offering a good quality service, there is room for everyone to grow.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana"><b>Could cashback sites not suffer if merchants decide not to work with them, as some have recently decided?</b></span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">Merchants and networks are not doing enough to differentiate the cashback sites who put effort in and who are willing to work with merchants to prevent fraud and maintain the quality of traffic. They see all cashback sites as being the same and I do think that is not right.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">We do understand that there needs to be extra care and a lot of effort put into maintaining quality of traffic . But treating all cashback sites the same without bothering to differentiate the more professional outfits is not fair.</span></div>
<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">Most merchants benefit a lot from cashback sites, with increased revenues, bigger basket values and better brand awareness, so I think it is unlikely there is going to be lot of merchants who would stop working.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana"><b>Fraud is a major concern for many merchants. What measures do you have in place to try to root it out?</b></span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">Over the last four years, we have spent thousands of man hours studying member trends. From studying the behaviour patterns, we have adopted what I believe to be the most stringent anti-fraud merchanisms and procedures in the industry. </span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">For example, if somebody signs up to any one of our cashback sites and immediately applies for insurance, they get flagged up and are investigated. If somebody applies for two insurance products at any time, they are flagged up. </span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">We belong to the <a rel="nofollow" title="Find out more about TLA which eDealsUK Limited is a proactive member of" target="_blank" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/The_Loyalty_Association/49/6">The Loyalty Association</a> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana">along with Rpoints, GreasyPalm and The Mutual and, even during our teleconference on Friday, we &nbsp;discussed how we can eliminate fraud and build more confidence from both merchants and consumers. All four loyalty businesses are working together to improve things.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">We believe in working closer with networks and merchants, but networks could do more to increase the awareness with the merchants on quality cashback sites with good standards. More networks should be working closely with proactive cashback sites such as ours and other members of TLA to improve confidence in the sector.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana"><b>Which networks does eDealsUK find it easiest to work with?</b></span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">No. Infact we think it would actually be beneficial for our entire network. All of us put together, we are not even scratching the surface of the market. </span></div>

And, as I was saying, with 20 million potential users of cashback sites, there is room for everyone to grow. </span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">We think it will be benefical for our other websites and the white-labels in the sense that our white-label partners would rather us taking a share of the 100% market than another company. This will mean more commissions and better rates for their websites. We will be hitting higher tiers &nbsp;more, and this will mean higher cashback amounts for their members and more revenue for them.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana"><b>There&rsquo;s a lot of talk about an economic downturn in the air. How do you think this will impact on cashback sites?</b></span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana">When the economy is in a downturn people will be watching their wallets. Whereas people may not have bothered about saving a few pounds during the good times, they will be more keen to keep a grip on their expenditure and so more likely to utilise cashback sites.</span></div>

<div><span style="font-family: Verdana"><b>Is there anything we&rsquo;ve missed out?</b></span></div>
