<p>I&#8217;ll still never forget the reaction of the Editor-in-Chief. &#8220;What, you&#8217;re quitting an acclaimed magazine to start an internet business? An <em>internet </em>business?&#8221; he exclaimed as he spluttered his tea. &#8220;And you&#8217;re going to be doing what, <em>affiliate</em> marketing? <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/link/5743/2" TARGET="_BLANK"><img src="http://www.azam.info/images/affiliate-marketing-help.jpg" ALT="4 August 1997 - 4 August 2011. We've now been travelling in cyberspace for 14 years" TITLE="4 August 1997 - 4 August 2011. We've now been travelling in cyberspace for 14 years" align=right hspace=4 vspace=11></a>What the hell is that and what lunatic would believe they could earn their crust through it?&#8221;</p>
<p>His reaction was not too dissimilar to that of most of my colleagues, friends and family when I announced I had decided to leave my role as a scribe on a now-defunct socio-cultural magazine. Even though I hadn&#8217;t been paid for four months despite working such long hours that I would regularly sleep on a mattress in the office, and the publication was so understaffed that I was allocated several pseudonyms so the readers didn&#8217;t suss out I was writing a third of the articles in each issue, everybody felt I was on securer grounds working in Old Media than risking my future on what they were certain was a fad that would go the way of <a rel="nofollow" title="A system of short-distance radio communications between individuals that was all the rage for a few years" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/CB_radio/5743/3" target="_blank">CB radio</a>.</p>
<p>It was a long time ago. Both Bill Clinton&#8217;s Democrats and Tony Blair&#8217;s Labour Party had recently <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/been/5743/4" TITLE="The United States presidential election of 1996 was won by Bill Clinton" ALT="The United States presidential election of 1996 was won by Bill Clinton" TARGET="_BLANK">been</a> <a rel="nofollow" title="BBC News item on the UK General Election of 1997" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/elected/5743/5" target="_blank" ALT="BBC News item on the UK General Election of 1997">elected</a>, and Puff Daddy was number one in the charts with his bittersweet <a rel="nofollow" title="Youtube video: Puff Daddy/Faith Evans/112 - I'll Be Missing You " href="http://www.azam.info/goto/I_ll_Be_Missing_You/5743/6" target="_blank">I&#8217;ll Be Missing You</a>, soon to be eclipsed by a remix of <a rel="nofollow" title="Youtube video: Elton John - Candle in the Wind 1997 (Princess Diana) " href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Candle_in_the_Wind/5743/7" target="_blank">Candle in the Wind</a>.</p>
<p>After several months of noctural cybersurfing as I researched the opportunities that may exist on the nascent interweb, I bit the bullet and launched Azam Marketing.</p>
<p>Last Thursday was exactly 14 years since that day when Azam was founded, 4 August, 1997.</p>
<p>It’s almost impossible to describe how emotional, challenging and rewarding the past 14 years have been. Azam Marketing has grown from a little baby to a sensible teenager.</p>
<p>We’ve managed to build a strong and reliable family unit around our growing youngster, and without that important foundation we wouldn’t be here today. Our loyal and dedicated team members have been a golden asset to Azam Marketing and I have had the privilege to travel on the roller coaster journey with some incredible people.</p>
<p>So what has been the key to our success?</p>
<p>Well, to be honest, I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;ve found it. The ambition, drive and passion required to succeed in business shouldn’t be a means to an end. We are constantly thinking up ways of pushing boundaries, and providing our clients with the most effective strategies, services, and technologies.</p>
<p>We want Azam Marketing to Godwillingly keep on growing and reaching new heights as each year passes by. There’s no expiry date or best before date. I love this industry and here&#8217;s to another 14 years!</p>
<p><strong>Azam Marketing in the 1990s: 14 Things You Didn&#8217;t Know about the Company in the Early Years</strong></p>
<p>1. The business was not originally called Azam Marketing and was rebranded a couple of times in the late nineties and early noughties.</p>
<p>2. Some of the company&#8217;s initial development took place in the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/University_of_Heidelberg/5743/8" TITLE="Founded in 1386, it is the oldest university in Germany and was the fourth university established in the Holy Roman Empire" ALT="Founded in 1386, it is the oldest university in Germany and was the fourth university established in the Holy Roman Empire" TARGET=_BLANK>University of Heidelberg</a>. I was spending long stints in Germany in the 1990s and, in the absence of my own internet connection, would go to the university every day to work on the computers.</p>
<p>3. Azam Marketing&#8217;s very first online sale was a book about Eastenders, which for those that don&#8217;t know is a long-running British soap opera. We earned 60p ($1). This was our 10% affiliate commission from the Internet Bookshop, a web retailer who was subsequently <a rel="nofollow" title="BBC News: WH Smith logs on to £9m internet book deal " href="http://www.azam.info/goto/purchased_by_WHSmith/5743/9" target="_blank">purchased by WHSmith</a> in June 1998.</p>
<p>4. Azam Marketing was an online book retailer in our own right in the 1990s and sold books on theology and cultural studies.</p>
<p>5. These were the days of pay-per-second dial-up connections, so my internet bills would regularly come to over £100 ($163) a month even though I would try to do as much work as possible offline.</p>
<p>6. A lot of what I learned about affiliate marketing was from Allan Gardyne of AssociatePrograms.com fame. His <a rel="nofollow" title="In recent years the newsletters have just become advertorials, but were jam-packed full of useful content in the 1990s" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/weekly_newsletters/5743/10" target="_blank">weekly newsletters</a> were a compelling source of knowledge about all things affiliate.</p>
<p>7. Having carried out SEO since the very earliest days, Azam started doing PPC in 1999 via <a rel="nofollow" title="Read about Origins of GoTo.com on Wikipedia" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Goto_com/5743/11" target="_blank">Goto.com</a>. This evolved into Overture, which was eventually snapped up by Yahoo.</p>
<p>8. Affiliate networks did not exist in Europe and the first ones we used were DirectLeads, Linkshare and Commission Junction in the United States.</p>
<p>9. We used to buy our domain names from NetNames in the UK and <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Network_Solutions/5743/12" target="_blank" onmouseover="window.status='http://www.networksolutions.com';return true;" onmouseout="window.status=' ';return true;">Network Solutions</a> in the USA. The latter <a title="Azam Marketing carries out Affiliate Management for NetSol" href="http://www.azam.info/network-solutions-affiliate-program-uk-europe/" target="_blank">is now a client</a>. Our .com domain name on NetNames cost £150 ($246) each and all changes to the DNS, URL forwarding and email addresses had to be made by fax.<img src="http://www.tqlkg.com/j898vvzntrCEGLGJFECEDLJLGKL" width="1" height="1" border="0"/></p>
<p>10. We ran a network of websites which reviewed books, games and other entertainment items. The main sources of traffic to the sites were web directories, banner exchanges and top site lists.</p>
<p>11. Some web directories didn&#8217;t accept credit card payments to get listed, so we&#8217;d have to post them cheques.</p>
<p>12. In the days when getting prominent listings on search engines was easier, our affiliate sites promoting merchants would sometimes list above the merchants themselves in the natural results. </p>
<p>13. The affiliate programs we mainly focused on sold books (Bookshop.co.uk, Books.com, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Amazon_com/5743/14" TARGET="_BLANK">Amazon.com</a>), magazines (<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Magmall/5743/15" target="_blank" onmouseover="window.status='http://www.magmall.com/?affid=CJ';return true;" onmouseout="window.status=' ';return true;" TITLE="US online retailer offering magazine subscriptions" ALT="US online retailer offering magazine subscriptions">Magmall</a>), cassettes, CDs and videos (CDParadise, VideoParadise), or offered comparison shopping (Dealpilot.com)<img src="http://www.lduhtrp.net/13111r6Az42OQSXSVRQOUXPRPWT" width="1" height="1" border="0"/><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=azam-info-20&#038;l=ur2&#038;o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></p>
<p>14. The first employee was Marilyn and she is still with us to this day!</p>

Over 700 agencies, advertisers, publishers and networks enjoyed a night of fine dining, socialising and dancing. Compering the glitzy black tie awards ceremony was renowned comedian Rufus Hound. </p>

<p>There are, of course, password managers which store your login details and enable you to login to websites with only a couple of clicks few but, being the lazy sod that I am, that is one click too many, so what I use is shortcut hotlink URLs. These are saved in my favorites bar at the top of my browser, and allow me to login to networks with just one click. </p>
<p>They must have saved me dozens of hours over the years and so I thought I&#8217;d share them with our readers. You need to replace the USERNAME with your login username and PASSWORD with your, errr, password.</p>

<p>You may follow the above link structures to login to other networks powered by the same engines, such as those powered by DirectTrack and TradeDoubler. </p>
<p>You can also adapt them to auto-login to advertiser interfaces. So, for instance, http://afuk.merchant.affiliatefuture.co.uk/login.aspx?username=USERNAME&#038;password=PASSWORD will enable a merchant on AffiliateFuture UK to automatically login to their account.</p>

<p>People who are new to the affiliate marketing game are often perplexed by the vast array of networks, all claiming to be the best. In the absence of detailed, independent appraisals of CPA networks, it can be hard to determine which to work with and which to not bother with.</p>
<p>As with everything in life and business, knowledge is power (and money &#8211; in their first week of training at Azam Marketing I have advised every staff member for years they should stay clear of three networks, Clash, Cleverat and DGM, all of which have gone bust in the UK in the last few months). </p>

The theme of this year&#8217;s conference was harnessing the viral power of social networks to gain the maximum exposure.<br />
<BR>I must say I was mightily impressed by the event. The venue was one I hadn&#8217;t been to before and was very swish. Everything was organised perfectly down to the smallest detail.<br />
<BR>The focial point of the event was the speakers who were presenting from 9:00 to 5:30. The line-up consisted of the great and the good from the global social media marketing scene, ranging from the likes of Chris Brogan to Andy Pipes and Luke Brynley-Jones.<br />
<BR>I was also invited to speak at the conference and talked about setting up syndication chains to extend the reach of your social media marketing messages without costing you more time. The Powerpoint presentation is here:<br />

The Powerpoint doesn&#8217;t do the talk justice I&#8217;m afraid as I don&#8217;t like to use them as a crutch as too many speakers do. For instance, I decided on the spur of the moment to make the audience do a Mexican wave to mark the World Cup (which somebody put a picture of <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/here/3851/2" TARGET=_BLANK TITLE="Nadeem makes the audience do a Mexican wave to try to replicate the atmosphere of the South African World Cup">here</a>). The audience seemed to enjoy it judging by the tweets at the time and that evening somebody even joked it may have inspired Mexico to beat France which they did 2-0 a couple of hours later in Polokwane.<br />

<p>School for Startups is the UK&#8217;s leading provider of business training for entrepreneurs, with lots of useful information on their <A HREF="http://www.azam.info/goto/website/3146/2" TITLE="Website for entrepreneurs" TARGET="_BLANK">website</A> and regular one-day business courses across the country. It is the inspiration of serial entrepreneur and angel investor Doug Richard, who many of you will know as a &#8216;dragon&#8217; or investor in the first two series of BBC&#8217;s Dragon&#8217;s Den. </p>
<p>I was told that Doug, who has seen some of the revenue figures of Azam Marketing, was &#8220;VERY impressed&#8221; with how well we were doing and invited to become a Featured Entrepreneur on his site. I think School for Startups does a wonderful job to inspire and educate budding entrepreneurs, and so agreed to be interviewed.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">So we have waved goodbye to the <a rel="nofollow" title="Yahoo News: 'Even with 10 years to decide, still no name for the decade'" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/the_decade_without_a_name/3052/2" target="_BLANK">the decade without a name</a> and find ourselves taking the first steps into another block of ten years we haven&#8217;t come to a consensus about what to call (the teenies, the tens, the teens?)<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">The passing of a year and even more so a decade invariably leads us to <a rel="nofollow" title="An individual London blogger reflects potently on life ten years on from the Millennium" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/muse_on_the_time_that_has_passed/3052/3" target="_BLANK">muse on the time that has passed</a>, reflect on unrealised hopes and aspirations, and motivates us to resolve to better our existences.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">It doesn&#8217;t take much brainpower to recall what I did in the noughties which was little more than 14 hour stints on computers interspersed with business meetings.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">As I stood on London&#8217;s Embankment to see a resplendent firework display herald in a new decade, just as I had done ten years earlier on the 1<sup>st</sup> of January 2000, I resolved to be the driver in my life and not the passenger.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">The clock of life is ticking and my unrealised dreams are many. My New Year resolutions are mainly aimed at being more focused. I have vowed, for instance, to not waste much of 2010, as I have done previous years, travelling from one corner of London to the other to help Del Boy entrepreneurs who would always be &#8220;too busy&#8221; to assist me or my colleagues in return (though funnily enough they always seem to find time to hang out in pubs for hours on end).<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">I&#8217;ve discovered 90% of the meetings I&#8217;m called into end up producing zero ROI; they will consist, for example, of a bunch of relative newbies &#8211; whose &#8216;successes&#8217; on the internet consist of building a voucher code site with an Alexa ranking of 16.3 zillion &#8211; discussing launching a &#8220;unique&#8221; web tool/network/search engine which will never get off the ground because the blokes end up blowing whatever venture capital they may have had within six months on fat cat salaries for themselves, swish offices and, of course, the must-have Official Launch Party of Tin Tin Media.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">So how would I rate my personal performance in the noughties? I can&#8217;t say anything more than a zero out of ten; if I&#8217;m feeling a bit gentler on myself, perhaps a zero point one. Anybody who knows me knows I am my fiercest critic, but even putting that aside, I am aware I have not taken the revenue-generating opportunities the web has presented, or when I did decide to stride down particular alley ways they usually ended up being dead-ends. I could easily blame the scores of people who sold me bagfuls of nonsense, but the fault lies exclusively with myself because of my gullibility in believing them.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">Anyhow, the one thing the school of hard-knocks has done is taught me to be a lot savvier, and from 2007 to 2009 Azam Marketing began to realise the potential it should have done a decade earlier from 1997 to 1999. Our agency doubled in size in 2009 and, after a year of hard work on new initiatives, I am extremely excited about the plans coming to fruition in 2010 and, in the third decade our business has existed in, Godwillingly enabling us to realise our true potential.<br />
</span></p>

<p>I am not a disciple of the &#8216;Death by Powerpoint&#8217; school of thought and firmly believe Powerpoints should help annotate a presentation, not be the presentation itself &#8211; how tedious is is it when a presenter spends an hour reading out his Powerpoints to an audience?! &#8211; so my slides never impart most of the information in my talks, but hey ho, it&#8217;s all we&#8217;ve got for the meanwhile (I&#8217;ve read in the A4U Expo blog the videos of all the presentations are being edited and will be online in a few week&#8217;s time).</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll start with the talk which was entitled &#8216;The Affiliate Sales Kit – Writing Killer Proposals and Selling Yourself To Merchants&#8217;. This was presented with the terrific Grant Reid, Senior Consultant at <A HREF="http://www.azam.info/goto/Stream_20/2668/2" TITLE="Grant Reid from consultancy Stream:20 presented on how affiliates must influence the key decision makers within the respective online teams" TARGET="_BLANK">Stream:20</A>. </p>

This was my first year at the Expo, and I feel privileged to have spent a few intensive but enjoyable days in the company of so many interesting and dynamic people.</p>
<p>Chris Johnson, from event organisers Existem, revealed over 1,000 people had come through the doors on day one alone which proved that, despite some complaints about ticket prices amongst the affiliate community, the Expo is regarded one of the key events on the affiliate calendar and worth every penny.</p>
<p>I agree with this wholeheartedly &#8211; the time went by incredibly quickly with unmissable seminars every hour. With three streams of presentations running at once, it was often difficult to choose which of the tantalising sessions to attend. Luckily, I was joined at the Expo by five of my Azam Marketing colleagues so we were able to attend most of the key talks and share feedback afterwards.</p>

<p>I pushed myself to attend as many varied seminars as possible, knowing that the opportunity to learn from the industry&#8217;s finest is invaluable. One of my favourites was &#8220;Meet the Super Affiliates&#8221; on day two, a panel-style Q&amp;A session. After a hesitant start, the questions soon came thick and fast by way of a Twitter feed on the big screen &#8211; an innovative way of allowing the audience to grill the panel without raising their hands and revealing their identities (although the avatars were often a giveaway!)</p>
<p>Speaker Tina Judic from artemis8 estimated only around 50% of all new projects and ideas succeed; but was quick to point out the key to success in the industry is persistence and having the drive to keep trying new things.</p>
<p>Another inspiring session was &#8220;The Affiliate Doctors Live!&#8221;, hosted by Duncan Jennings of eConversions, affiliate and blogger Kieron Donoghue, Jamie Harwood of UK Web Media and Dixon Jones of Receptional. The superb line-up of panellists generated thought-provoking discussions and struck an ideal balance of giving practical advice with insights into their own experiences.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Audience members were also invited to submit their websites for critique, and it was fantastic to see the panellists were willing to share their secrets and tips with newbies. I came away from the presentation with a notebook full of hints to pass onto my own clients and colleagues.</p>

<p>Further highlights of the Expo for me included getting my caricature done by the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Gone_Digging/2613/1" target="_BLANK">Gone Digging</a> artist on the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Webgains/2613/2" target="_BLANK">Webgains</a> stand, and watching Nadeem take to the stage to speak at the A4U Expo for the first time. His two seminars, &#8220;My 12 Biggest Affiliate Marketing Mistakes in 12 Years&#8221; and &#8220;The Affiliate Sales Kit – Writing Killer Proposals and Selling Yourself To Merchants&#8221; were among the best received of all the sessions, and Nadeem was mobbed by audience members afterwards all wanting his business card!</p>
<p>I was also pleased to catch up with a few of Azam&#8217;s new clients such as <a rel="nofollow" title="Signature Gifts owns several leading UK online stores" href="http://www.azam.info/goto/Signature_Gifts/2613/3" target="_blank">Signature Gifts</a>. The exhibition hall, which had over 40 stands this year, provided the ideal backdrop for us to meet and chat with relevant network staff and affiliates.</p>

<p><span style="color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">The recession has accelerated the <a title="'Advertising budgets to continue moving online in 2009 as other channels collapse'" href="http://www.azam.info/online-marketing-spend-growth-uk-usa/" target="_self">migration of advertising spend from traditional media</a> such as print, radio and television to online according to the report. IAB chief executive Guy Phillipson says online advertising will continue to  grow: &#8220;We could see absolutely see it grow to being a 30% medium (of ad share  spend), to go past £4bn to even £5bn annually&#8221;.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">The UK remains the place where it&#8217;s all happening, with the world&#8217;s highest market share of ad spend going online.<br />

<p style="text-align: justify"><span style="color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">When I ditched a long-standing career in old media to start a pure play dot.com company in 1997, most people were critical of my decision. Not understanding the internet or appreciating its potential, many of my journalist colleagues stuck to their cosy jobs while I thrust myself into cyberspace because I was adamant the internet would destroy much of traditional media.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">It&#8217;s not a decision I made with any pleasure, and every time I hear about a newspaper closing down or a book publisher shedding staff, it upsets me because I always have been and always will be an aficionado of print, but one can&#8217;t be a Luddite and has to move with the times.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color:black; font-family:Verdana; font-size:10pt">In the same way, is your business still clinging to some antiquated and ineffective forms of marketing just because that&#8217;s what you&#8217;ve always done? Your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and PayPerClick (PPC) efforts should go hand in hand. You are sacrificing traffic if you aren’t targeting customers in both areas: </p>
<p>• 80% of the time searchers go to the organic results first<br />
• 65% of search traffic goes to the top ten search results<br />
• 60% of searchers click on paid ads sometimes while 12% say they click on them always or most of the time.</p>
<p>Use them together for the most effective marketing strategy: </p>
<p>• Organic SEO is a great long term investment which everyone who is serious about their website should invest in, but PPC can start driving traffic right away. Smart customers will use this to their benefit. Begin SEO and PPC at the same time so you are getting traffic to your site right away, while you wait for your organic rankings start to rise. Once you’ve obtained strong organic rankings, you can reduce your PPC spending, but you shouldn’t stop it altogether.</p>
<p>You should never put all your marketing budget in one basket &#8211; it’s too risky. A solid marketing plan should minimize risks and maximize impressions: </p>
<p>• If you have high organic rankings but no paid ads, then you are letting your PPC-savvy competitors steal away some traffic from you because a large percentage of potential customers will click on paid ads too.<br />
• If your organic rankings suddenly take a dive due to search engine algorithm changes and you don’t have a PPC campaign then you are suddenly invisible in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). Granted you can start PPC at any time, but if you aren’t familiar with it, it can take some time (even for a professional) to figure out the most-effective PPC strategy for your site.<br />
• If you only focus on paid listings, you are missing out on the 80% of traffic that goes to organic rankings. Also, research indicates that many customers put a higher “trust” level on organic rankings since many customers are aware that those ads are paid for. You may find that your conversion rate for organic rankings is higher than that of your PPC campaign.<br />
• If you only focus on paid listings and suddenly a competitor enters the PPC market with a big budget that you can’t compete with, then you are going to lose your placement and now you are looking at 3-5 months before you can counter that with organic rankings. </p>

<p><strong>Budgeting </strong></p>
<p>PPC and SEO can be combined to offer an excellent search marketing campaign. Together they can help to maximize web traffic, capture highly targeted visitors, enhance sales, and generate brand awareness. By budgeting wisely, you will be able to use PPC and SEO to their full advantage. </p>
<p>• For new online storefronts or websites, PPC will drive traffic to your site immediately. Based on your budget, a good strategy will be to start using PPC advertising, invest in SEO as soon as you have the funds to invest in it, and begin to taper off your PPC advertising as your organic listings begin to increase.<br />
• From a recent study at the Penn State School of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), researchers found that on more than 80% of searches, study participants went first to the results identified as &#8220;organic.&#8221; Sponsored links were viewed first less than 10% of the time. A safe bet is to break down your SEO and PPC budget into roughly 70-80% organic SEO and 20-30% PPC. This will help you drive long-term, consistent traffic to your site.<br />
• Set a goal for the amount of traffic you expect to see in a given day. Then, monitor your traffic sources using a quality web analytics program. Turn on conversion tracking code provided by PPC engines like Google and Yahoo!. Information is power. You will begin to see which form of advertising is working best for your industry and your unique situation. When you know where your traffic is coming from and which visitors are converting, you’ll be able to make better marketing decisions.<br />
• Diversify your efforts. Remember that the search engine marketing industry is not limited to these two forms of advertising. Additional options such as blogs, press releases and RSS feeds will help you take advantage of the fact that consumers are first visiting search engines when they are looking to make a purchase.</p>
